The Freedom Train—January 16, 2012

In actuality there were two attempts to complete the march beginning on March 7, 1965. On March 25, 1965 the marchers made it to Montgomery.  The journey from Selma to Montgomery was 54 miles.  The Freedom Train ride from San Jose to San Francisco, CA is that approximate distance.

 

Riders board the train in San Jose for a peaceful journey with stops in Sunnyvale, Palo Alto, San Mateo and arrives in San Francisco. Once in San Francisco riders then participate in information sessions about the Civil Rights era.

2012 Departure Stations &Times:
San Jose – 9:30am                Sunnyvale – 9:45am
Palo alto – 9:59am                San Mateo 10:22am
Arrives at San Francisco at 10:55am

· Check schedules to make sure there is a train stop in your city.

· Please arrive at your station 30 minutes before departure.

· All youth under 15 years of age must have adult supervision.

· No bullhorn usage allowed in train cars.

· Due to limited seating, there will be no refunds.

· Day passes, or regular train tickets will not be accepted in place of specially printed Freedom Train Tickets.

 

TICKET INFORATION and PROCESS

Please note: The cost to ride the Freedom Train is only $10.00 per person. There are no discount tickets for seniors and children. For their safety, and the safety of others, children must have their own seat, and be under the supervision of an adult at all times.

 

The $10.00 Freedom Train Ticket is a round trip ticket that allows you to take any train back from San Francisco on the day of the Freedom Train only.

·         Freedom Train Tickets cannot be purchased from the train stations. You may either purchase them on Brown Paper Tickets  www.brownpapertickets.com, OR pay by check.

 

   Brown Paper Tickets (Will Call): 

§  Brown Paper Ticket receipts cannot be used in place of specially printed Freedom Train Tickets.

§  Please bring your Brown Paper Ticket receipt to the SAN JOSE DIRIDON train station to receive your specially printed Freedom Train Ticket at Will Call.

 

   Pay by Check (Mail)

§  Send a check payable to the MLKSCV Association, with a self-addressed stamped envelope and mail it to The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Santa Clara Valley, P.O. Box 4738, San Jose, Ca. 95150.

§  Once we receive your check, we will send your ticket/s back to you in your self-addressed stamped envelope, so PLEASE be sure to include your self addressed stamped envelope with your check! The cut off date for mailed ticket requests received by the Association is Monday, January 9, 2012.

ALSO Note:

§  Please arrive at the Diridon (San Jose) Station no later than 8:30am, as lines are long.

   Please arrive at other stations at least 30 minutes prior to departure time.

§  Seniors and persons with disabilities will be boarded on the train first.

§  Bullhorns are not allowed on the train.

§  Children must have their own ticket.
